- Some people believe that going to a high school is all they need; some believe that going to college is enough. Others believe that an online academy or a YouTube tutorial will fulfill their educational needs. But, college degrees are only part of the equation. Education is about realizing there is more to learn and that it isn’t just a one-time deal. Education is not just about remembering the names of the wars but also understanding the causes to prevent them from happening again. Thinking about new ideas and reasoning as part of true education.
- Schools and colleges can’t teach you everything. Most often, it is also your experience. Being in a war, being in a lockdown, surviving being jobless, surviving diseases, surviving toxic childhood teaches you things that nothing else can. Schools cannot teach you that, and how could they?
- Would you consider all graduates more educated than a drop-out? Reading books is essential, but there are times when you must test the theory and expand your horizons. So, branch out, travel and speak with locals, check out festivals, volunteer, join interest and meetup groups, and try new skills.
- You might be more privileged than you realize. You might be born into a country with good schools, good food, and good pay for your parents. You might live in a country that is macroeconomically stable, not in a war, and wealthy enough to provide infrastructure benefits. Being able to respect others, have empathy, and have basic common sense is a big part of true education.
- Ultimately, true education is learning to teach yourself. It prepares you to prepare yourself for the ever-changing world around you. A true education goes on forever.
