“O snail, Climb Mount Fuji, But slowly, slowly!”
Kobayashi Issa
This beautiful haiku captures the essence of the journey towards achieving meaningful, seemingly insurmountable goals with patience and perseverance.
Imagine setting a target not just to achieve something great but to embark on a journey that never truly ends.
This idea, daunting at first, is a powerful recipe for a fulfilling life.
Why Chase an Endless Goal?
“Imagine aiming for a goal so vast, it becomes your life’s journey,” is a thought I had that makes me consider the true purpose of any of our ambitions.
It’s about enjoying the path we’re on, rather than rushing to the finish line. But why is this approach so rewarding?
Consider the entrepreneur who builds a successful company, sells it for a fortune, and then… feels lost.
This scenario is more common than you might think. Achieving a major goal can leave a surprising emptiness behind.
Why? Because the joy is in the journey, in the challenges we overcome, and in the person we become along the way.
Thinking about my own path, where I navigate Stoicism and philosophy on my blog, stoicoftheday.com, and parallel this with the pursuit of jiu-jitsu in MMA.
It’s my personal way of setting unending goals and committing to a life where the pursuit of knowledge and physical mastery go hand in hand.
Enter Ikigai
Ikigai, a Japanese concept, means finding your “reason for being.”
It’s about discovering joy and fulfillment in everyday life by balancing what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.
This balance is where endless goals live.
It’s about pursuing something that gives you purpose and makes you jump out of bed each morning with excitement.
Learning from Examples
Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, is a great example. His goal wasn’t just to build computers. He aimed to make a dent in the universe by blending technology with design.
Jobs once said,
“The journey is the reward.”
Steve Jobs
This mindset kept him innovating and pushing boundaries throughout his life.
Another inspiring figure is Malala Yousafzai, who turned her fight for education into a global movement.
Her goal transcends any single achievement, it’s a lifelong commitment to change.
Asking the Right Questions
What drives you? What is your ikigai?
These questions can help steer your life towards more meaningful and rewarding destinations.
Effect of Unending Goals
When you chase an unending goal, you inspire others.
You become a living example that it’s not just about reaching a peak but how you climb mountains after mountains, enjoying every step, learning, and growing.
Bringing It All Together
The pursuit of an unending goal is not about chasing an impossible dream.
It’s about embracing a mindset of continuous growth, finding your ikigai, and enjoying the beauty of becoming.
It’s about setting a course for a journey that enriches your life and the lives of those around you, with every step taken with passion and purpose.
So, what’s your never-ending goal? How will you embark on this journey?
Remember, the most fulfilling paths in life are those that keep unfolding, inviting us to explore, learn, and become more, endlessly.
