With all the advances in technology these days, it seems like everyone is always on the go, working extra jobs, or starting their own businesses.

This non-stop, always-hustling way of life has become pretty common.

But even though this busy, always-on-the-go lifestyle can seem exciting, don’t discount the good old 9-to-5 job.

Let’s talk about why the usual full-time job still deserves a thumbs-up, especially when you think about the benefits it has for our mental well-being.

1. Structure and Routine

Psychologically, we are all creatures of habit.

We thrive on routines and structured environments. As much as we crave excitement, the predictability of a steady job can offer comfort and reduce anxiety.

“A solid routine fosters a well-worn groove for one’s mental energies and helps stave off the tyranny of moods.”

Mason Currey

A regular job offers this routine, a rhythm that can enhance mental well-being and foster productivity.

2. Intrinsic and Extrinsic Rewards

A traditional job often provides clear pathways for recognition and progress.

Promotions, salary increments, and performance-based bonuses are tangible rewards that satisfy our psychological need for achievement.

Furthermore, a steady job allows for intrinsic motivation.

When we have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in challenging tasks that match our skills, we experience a state of ‘flow.’

This is often possible in structured work environments where your role is well-defined, and you can strive for mastery.

3. The Need for Belonging

Maslow, a well-known psychologist, placed a sense of belonging high on his hierarchy of human needs.

In a 9-to-5 job, you’re part of a team, a larger entity.

Regular interaction with colleagues, even if virtually, can fulfill our innate desire for social connection.

In contrast, the solo journey in hustle culture can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation and disconnection.

4. Work-Life Balance

Despite the seeming freedom that hustle culture offers, the blurring boundaries between work and personal life can lead to burnout.

A regular job, with its more defined working hours, allows for a better work-life balance.

A traditional job can provide this satisfaction by offering a clearer differentiation between professional responsibilities and personal time.

5. Security and Self-Esteem

Having a regular income, job security, and employee benefits can directly impact our self-esteem and overall mental health.

Financial stability reduces stress, allowing us to focus on personal growth and self-fulfillment, instead of worrying about making ends meet.

A steady job can provide financial stability that cushions against hardships, thereby contributing to better mental health.

Conclusion

While the flexibility and potentially high rewards of hustle culture can be enticing, the psychological benefits of a 9-to-5 job should not be dismissed lightly.

The “best” decision is the one that brings you satisfaction, stability, and joy.

After all, as the old saying goes,

“Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
